“The adoption of the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change is an important step forward in putting Canada on the path of becoming a leader in fighting climate change and shifting to renewable energy. I want to congratulate the Prime Minister and the Minister of Environment and Climate Change on reaching this agreement. After a decade with a previous federal government that ignored climate change and missed repeated opportunities to capitalize on the emerging green economy, we finally have some concrete steps towards positive change.
“In Vancouver we’ve been able to significantly reduce our climate pollution at the same time as we’ve had the strongest economy in Canada, proving that strong climate leadership and economic development go hand in hand. Our work to improve building efficiency, support transit, embrace renewable energy and expand electric vehicle use all have the ability to be adopted across the country, creating good-paying green jobs while transitioning off of fossil fuels.
“Vancouver will feel the full force of climate change; already we are staring at billions of dollars in infrastructure costs to protect our neighbourhoods from rising sea levels and storm surges. Cities have been leading the way in the fight against climate change, and we look forward to working with the federal and provincial governments to share in the success we’ve realized from tangible action to reduce climate pollution.”
